Role Purpose: Applies knowledge of laser system design and materials processing with general engineering principles and methods to design and lead R&D projects in the application of new technologies to build and support new products and processes. Can work through complex challenges and problem solving on their own, can find opportunities for process improvements, able to multi-task projects effectively and efficiently, guide junior level engineers on technical issues, and represent the team to both internal and external business partners as needed.

Selected candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop and execute test plans (lab studies, validations, etc.; protocols and reports) to support equipment and process characterization and validation.

  • Design, optimization, and troubleshooting of laser systems to support R&D projects.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering/science field is required.

  • A minimum of 4 years prior hands-on project process development experience.

  • A minimum of 3 years prior hands-on laser system design and process characterization experience.

  • Knowledge of optical properties and laser physics.

  • Previous experience in the Lifesciences industry.

Additional Skills:

Solid comprehension of principles, theories, and concepts relevant to laser processing and general engineering.

  • Experience designing and executing characterization test plans (e.g. DOE) is required.

  • Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Proficient computer skills including all major common software is required.

  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, etc.) is helpful.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment.

  • Previous experience in both R&D and Manufacturing roles is highly desirable.

  • Must be self-motivated and able to independently lead and move projects forward.

  • Must be willing to perform hands-on duties in the lab.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
