Edwards Lifesciences Senior Manager, Polymers & Biomaterials in Irvine, California

Key responsibilities include:

  • Build a team of Polymer Scientists and Biomaterials Engineers that will be dedicated to solving the complex challenges of structural heart diseases

  • Provide consistent direction to Polymeric Materials team to instill a spirit of innovation through cross-functional collaboration. Promote an environment of entrepreneurship where team members are encouraged to take risks and think creatively to solve complex problems.

  • Establish close partnership with R&D leaders within Transcatheter Heart Valve (THV), Surgical Structural Heart (SSH), Critical Care, and Transcatheter Mitral and Tricuspid Therapy (TMTT) to ensure customer needs and stakeholders’ requirements are met to advance the development of ground-breaking new therapies.

  • Provide leadership to the Polymers team in developing and/or selecting novel polymeric materials/composites, polymer processing, surface modification techniques and biocompatible coating technologies that allow advanced designs and development of products that treat structural heart diseases.

  • Collaborate internally with the leaders of the product development teams to ensure CoE’s strategy, resourcing and project prioritization supporting different business units is in alignment with corporate strategy and develop external partnership with leading institutions around the world in scouting novel technologies in Polymers and Textiles.

  • Lead the team in support of product development and ensure all work is performed with highest quality per internal, ISO and regulatory standards.

  • Maintain up to date knowledge of industry best practices and emerging technological trends in polymeric materials and surface modification to explore novel applications supporting company’s strategic goals.

  • Clearly communicate progress against project goals through regular updates to the CoE leaders and key stakeholders.

  • Demonstrate focus on staff development, ethics and motivation through appropriate assignment of opportunities and training activities to support the achievement of both professional development goals and business goals.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate requires a PhD in Polymers Science and Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering or Biomaterials Engineering or Biomedical Engineering with at least 8 years’ experience or MS with 11 years’ of R&D experience in the medical devices, combination products or related industry with at least 4 years in a functional management role.

  • Fundamental knowledge of Chemistry/Chemical Engineering with specialization in Polymer Science and Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering, or Biomaterials. Advanced Knowledge of Polymer science, Polymer synthesis, characterization, blends development, extrusion, injection molding, surface modification, biocompatible coatings, and composite formulation is a must.

  • Action Oriented - ability to make strategic decisions (technical and staff utilization) and influence leaders and scientists to execute those initiative while managing business strategy and value creation

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute project plan - time management, prioritization, managing the projects and R&D projects/teams and measuring progress by effectively collaborating with cross-functional leadership.

  • Experience in supervising Scientists and Engineering working in full-time and/or part-time capacity, contractors, and technicians. Independent planning of the key R&D activities to support a new product development program is a must.

  • Ability to develop annual operating plan and effectively manage budget.

  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency; understands the importance of outperforming and outpacing the competition in meeting customer and patient needs.

  • Ability to influence cross-functional partners, business units, and/or sites and may engage with and influence senior management.
