Edwards Lifesciences Senior Lab Supervisor, Polymers and Textiles CoE in Irvine, California
This is an exciting opportunity for a strong Lab Supervisor with Textile experience to join the newly formed Polymers and Textiles Center of Excellence (CoE) at Edwards. This Supervisor will have a part with other dedicated employees to solving the complex challenges of structural heart diseases in order to transform treatment and significantly improve patients’ lives.
Ensure effective operation of all laboratory equipment and serve as point of contact for instrument installations, up-gradation, preventative maintenance and repairs, calibration and efficient utilization for Polymers & Textiles Center of Excellence (CoE).
Trouble shoot and repair general instrumentation.
Be responsible for move/add/change request forms.
May organize and participate in vendor negotiations, product and software evaluations, tutorials, and facility modifications.
May submit purchase orders and provide inputs into capital approval requests for equipment
Maintain an adequate inventory of research lab materials, laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Coordinate daily consumable supply stocking and ordering.
Interface with Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and act as a liaison between departments, vendors and the Engineering / Scientific staff to complete lab modifications and ensure safety compliance
Perform safety audits with EH&S and participate in Environmental Site Assessments (ESA's)
Work with EH&S to assess and approve new chemicals and materials; and ensure that Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and related documents are up to date for new and existing chemicals.
Provide technical input to purchasing and other functional areas.
Be responsible for development of tracking procedures, establishment and maintenance of service contracts and warranties with vendors.
Maintain metrics for equipment utilization and deploy tools for most effective and efficient of lab equipment. Ensure safety protocols are implemented and effectively followed for safe use of lab equipment.
Train new Engineering & Scientific staff in the general use and function of designated instrumentation and create and refine user protocols for general use.
Work with the team engineering manager to ensure the right technical staff is assigned to teams to meet operational objectives and support cross-training as needed to meet those objectives.
May set up and run textiles and polymer technology machines for engineering prototypes
Operate lab or industrial scale machine/s (range of different technologies) involved in prototyping to generate textiles, polymers and similar assemblies
Perform set-up on textile and related machines involving mechanical components as well threading of fine textile yarns using mechanical tools
Ensure all equipment related to polymer development, processing, and testing are well maintained.
Support engineering activities such as test, check-out, modification, fabrication, and assembly under the close supervision of Engineers
Build prototypes, sub-assemblies, and prepare feasibility test units, samples, and/or chemical solutions
Perform work using drawings, diagrams, written and verbal instructions, layouts or defined plans to perform testing, checkout, and trouble-shooting functions
Perform operational test and identify failure modes on systems and equipment
Participate in skill development training related technologies associated with textiles, polymers and allied fields
Support cross functional teams on lab resources and prototyping via emails and participate in project meetings to update the status
This position may have direct technician reports
Good hand and eye coordination Able to clearly read, comprehend, write, and speak English
Good verbal communication, interpersonal, and relationship building skills
Good understanding of research equipment and functions in a lab environment
Good computer skills, including use of MS Office Suite
Strict attention to details
May require moving heavy equipment using motorized material handling equipment and/or forklifts.
Knowledge of processes in the use of machines to ensure successful outcomes, as well as to devise process changes
Ability to read and understand procedures, drawings, schematics and carry out assembly instructions
Must be able to work with minimum supervision Work in a very collaborative team environment, including inter-departmental teams
Education and Experience:
- Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree and with at least 4 years of experience in textiles and allied manufacturing and/or R&D environment with supervisory experience
- Direct hands-on experience in performing preventive maintenance and repair on variety of textile and polymers related equipment and processes such as warping, winding, weaving, industrial knitting, braiding, post-processing, polymer extrusion etc., Experience in operating variety of textiles and polymer testing equipment
