Edwards Lifesciences Principal Engineer - Surgical Structural Heart in Irvine, California
This is a unique opportunity for a Principal Engineer with a creative, curious, entrepreneurial and technical mindset. This position is within research and development discovery group exploring new or poorly met clinical needs and related technologies in the Surgical Structural Heart space. You will be part of a small highly motivate team with high visibility. Apply your deep technical knowledge, clinical experience and drive to help patients. Independently lead research, work closely with clinicians and external research partners and team up with Business Development and Marketing creating new directions for our Surgical Structural Heart business.
Technical leadership of early stage technology proof of concept projects.
Own proof of concept projects. Responsible for planning, execution and delivery of complex projects that span multiple disciplines.
Brainstorm, synthesize and analyze concepts either generated internally or through evaluation of external innovation and opportunities
Ability to build proof of concept ideas into demonstrative prototypes
Partner with Strategy and Marketing partners on areas of interest
Work closely with clinicians to understand needs, gather relevant feedback for concepts and methods and perform benchtop and animal testing of early phase concepts
Learn and build knowledge of competitive technologies as well as medical and biomedical developments related to Surgical Structural Heart
Present results and strategies to executive team and partnering physicians
Able to take concepts from needs definition to first human use
Bachelor’s in engineering; (biomedical, physics, electrical is preferred) with 8+ years medical device experience OR a Master’s or PhD degree in engineering with 4+ years of medical device experience.
Must be able to demonstrate strong skills and curiosity as an innovative problem solver.
Proven ability to apply technical knowledge and judgement to complex technical problems and technical proficiency is required.
Hands-on experience with sensors, low noise electronics and signal transduction is required.
Knowledge of applicable FDA regulations for medical device industry required
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment; comfort with ambiguity
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team is essential.
Must also be comfortable interacting with leading Surgical Structural Heart physicians as well as taking an active role in animal studies and clinical work in the OR/ICU environments.
Knowledge of Heart Valve design and construction is desirable.
Basics knowledge of FEA as it relates to structural heart is desirable.
Start-up experience is desirable
Experience with early phase development of technologies through bench and animal studies to proof of concept is desirable.
